One of the best ways to improve your health is to take more exercise each day. This doesn't mean running marathons or joining expensive gyms just walking a little more each day can bring health benefits. Regular exercise increases your energy levels and improves your general health and mental well-being. 30 minutes or more of moderate exercise on at least five days a week is best but the key to long-term benefits is to start small and build exercise gradually into your life at you own pace.

  • Walk or cycle rather than drive short journeys.
  • Take a walk in the lunch-hour.
  • Go for a bike ride, join a dance class or just go for a swim.

Managing your weight

Being the right weight for your height will help your body stay healthy. Although many people put on weight as they get older, this can be avoided by building more activity into your daily routine and by eating a healthy diet.
Your body will store fat when your calorie intake (the amount of energy you consume) is greater than the amount of calories you burn as energy.

The recommended daily calorie intake is 2500 for an average man and 2000 for an average woman. Children, pregnant women and older adults have different energy levels and your GP or pharmacist can advise you about these.
However, overweight children are more likely to be overweight as adults and this can lead to health problems developing early on, so it's important to seek professional advice for any children who may be overweight.
